BATAVIA, NY (10/30/2013)(readMedia)-- The Genesee Community College Athletics program held its first annual "Trick or Trot 'Fund-Run' 5k" last Thursday night and raised over $1,000 to benefit the United Way of Genesee County, which supports 15 non-profit agencies throughout the local community.

Each participating GCC student-athlete raised money through donations and pledges and took part in a 5k run/walk which was held at the Batavia Campus walking trail. Participants were encouraged to dress up in the spirit of Halloween and awards were handed out for the best costume.

"This event was a success for the first year," said GCC Athletics Director Kristen Schuth. "We would like to grow this event to have more community involvement in the future. Our athletes enjoyed the experience and getting to know other teams," Schuth said.

Genesee Community College athletics program endeavors to provide a quality and competitive intercollegiate athletics program consistent with the National Junior Collegiate Athletics Association (NJCAA) philosophy and the overall educational mission of Genesee Community College. Participation in collegiate athletics should be an extension of the total educational experience for the student athlete. The inherent philosophy emphasizes the athletic setting as a classroom used to teach character, commitment, work ethic, respect for differences, and the importance of sacrifice, teamwork, and cooperation.
