Green Groups to Deliver 180 Clocks to Gov Cuomo to "Buy Time" for Fracking Proposal Review

ALBANY, NY (10/04/2011)(readMedia)-- Green groups today will deliver 180 water-powered clocks to Governor Andrew Cuomo's office in the State Capitol. Environmental Advocates of New York and Citizens Campaign for the Environment are calling on Governor Cuomo to extend the state's public comment period on its draft revised Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS) and draft regulations for gas drilling by means of high volume hydraulic fracturing, or "fracking," from 90 days to 180 days.

WHO:

Representatives from Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Environmental Advocates of New York will deliver clocks purchased by their members from across the state to Governor Cuomo to protest the Department of Environmental Conservation’s fast-tracking of the state’s environmental review and regulations for fracking.

WHAT:

The state’s 1,500-plus page environmental review of gas drilling by means of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking, as well as regulations and a draft stormwater permit all are limited to a 90-day public comment period. The comment period, which expires on December 12, 2011, is inadequate given the technical nature of the documents and New Yorkers’ concerns about fracking.

From start to finish, gas development that relies on fracking is an industrial process that threatens our water. State after state, from Wyoming to Pennsylvania, has documented its dangers. New York can't afford to put short-term gas profits ahead of the long-term health of our water and our communities.
