Groups Call on NYS Leaders to Stand Up for Clean Energy

ALBANY, NY (03/14/2012)(readMedia)-- In response to the State Assembly's budget proposal to sweep up to $200 million in ratepayer-funded clean energy and energy efficiency programs administered by the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority, more than 20 environmental, energy and community groups sent a letter to Governor Cuomo, the State Senate, and the Assembly opposing the the use of clean energy funds for non-energy related purposes. The Adirondack Council, Alliance for Clean Energy New York, American Lung Association in New York, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Earthjustice, Environment New York, Environmental Advocates of New York, Natural Resources Defense Council, NYC Environmental Justice Alliance (NYC-EJA), New York Interfaith Power & Light, New York League of Conservation Voters, Pace Energy & Climate Center, Sierra Club Atlantic Chapter, Solar Energy Industries Association released the following statement:

"We strongly oppose the Assembly's proposal to raid $200 million of New York's clean energy money. Investments in clean energy and energy efficiency reduce pollution and benefit New Yorkers by reducing energy bills and providing new economic opportunities.

Unlike many investments, every dollar NYSERDA invests in energy efficiency returns $3 or more. An independent 2009 review of the Renewable Portfolio Standard, one of NYSERDA's energy programs, found a six to one ratio of benefits to costs.

Clean energy and energy efficiency investments are reducing mercury and smog, as well as the pollution that's changing our climate. Sweeping investments that clean up our air and save ratepayers money is reckless, especially when more than 65 percent of New Yorkers live in counties where air pollution endangers lives."
