Hillary's Supporters Feel Sting of Betrayal Beyond Politics
ALBANY, NY (06/05/2008)(readMedia)-- Hillary Clinton's supporters are hearing over and over again that it is a shame that the Senator is not making history this year. As the first woman to run as a major party nominee, we must remember that the Senator did indeed make history. She garnered more votes (eighteen million) than any other candidate in the history of the presidential primary. She enjoyed the majority of the votes from women, Latino's, Asians, and working-class citizens. She won the swing states that would have guaranteed her the White House. Now the Democrats have a real uphill battle.
Hillary's supporters are sad and angry about the political scam that was the Rules Committee meeting, where the party took earned delegates from Senator Clinton and gave them to Obama. Hillary's supporters are sad and mad that the Democratic party did not stand up against sexism in the media. Hillary's supporters are sad and mad that a qualified, intelligent woman was denied the chance to lead the most powerful country in the world, and that she was denied the chance to send a message of hope and potential greatness to women everywhere. The Democratic party will indeed suffer the consequences of its actions. Republican women who crossed over for Hillary will go back to their own party, while others will either stay home or write in their votes for Hillary. Still others will leave the party that has no respect for the women who constitute two thirds of it's base.
In recent times, the Republicans have stood for their beliefs. Although many of us progressives fight vehemently against their platform, at least we know who the enemy is. This time the Democrats have shown their true colors and it's high time for a party that respects the needs and rights of over half the population. Maybe Senator Clinton should start a National Women's Party. She certainly has the base she would need to make it happen. At least that party will state its mission clearly through it's title. The Democrats certainly did not live up to their name.
