SAVANNAH, GA (05/23/2013)(readMedia)-- William B. Travis High School graduate and SCAD B.F.A. animation student Bruce Sampson, recently won first place at the annual Sand Arts Festival held on Tybee Island's North Beach. Sampson won in the "SCAD Spirit" category.
The imaginative creation, built by Sampson, Amanda Bullen, Paige Cano, and Grant Whitsitt features a tiered beehive complete with a textured hexagonal honeycomb pattern in celebration of Art the Bee, the SCAD mascot.
"I knew my life career had to be steered towards art because of my creative hobbies," Sampson said.
The competition showcases students' talents by inviting them to design and build inventive, eye-catching sand sculptures in a variety of categories. Students representing all schools and disciplines competed for $5,000 in prizes.
Originating in the early 1990s as a field trip for foundation studies classes, the SCAD Sand Arts Festival has evolved into the perfect 3-D sculptural complement to the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park each April. Visit scad.edu/sandarts for full event details and competition rules.
