ICYMI: New York Times and Daily News Endorse Ranked Choice Voting for New York City

Ranked Choice Voting would change the way New Yorkers vote in primaries and special elections.

NEW YORK, NY (10/16/2019) (readMedia)-- The New York Times and Daily News have both endorsed Ranked Choice Voting for New York City. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) will be Question 1 when voters go to the polls, either to vote early, October 26th-November 3rd, or on Election Day November 5th.

"Ranked-choice voting is a smart, tested reform that would make certain that New Yorkers elect candidates who have the support of a majority of voters. Isn't that how democracy is supposed to work?" said the New York Times Editorial Board.

"On Nov. 5 - actually, before then, since early voting is now the law here - New Yorkers will get to say yay or nay to five potential changes to the City Charter, which is Gotham's foundational legal document. We hereby give our blessing to the most important of those reforms: ranked-choice voting for local primaries and special elections," said the Daily News Editorial Board.

RCV gives voters the option to rank their top five candidates in local New York City primary and special elections. If voters still want to vote for just one candidate, they can. A candidate who collects a majority of the vote, fifty percent plus one, wins. If there's no majority winner, then the last place candidate will be eliminated and the second choice votes for that candidate are redistributed. The process is repeated until there is a majority winner.

"New Yorkers deserve elections that lift up our voices, and push candidates to campaign better. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) is the simple solution that puts power back in the hands of the people where it belongs. CommonCause/NY is proud that the New York Times and the Daily News agree," said Susan Lerner, Executive Director of Common Cause/NY."
