Innovative Websites Earn Langley Federal Credit Union Award for Member, Consumer Education

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (11/11/2010)(readMedia)-- Langley Federal Credit Union has won 2nd Place honors in the Louise Herring Award for Philosophy in Action competition. The competition honors credit unions for their practical application of the "People-Helping-People" philosophy that is the hallmark of the credit union movement. It is sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA).

The credit union's award-winning entry focused on its member and consumer education program through two websites - IownLFCU.com and whackafee.com. The two sites showcased the differences between not-for-profit, member-owned credit unions and stockholder-owned, for-profit banks.

Both sites presented the "Credit Union Difference" in a unique, fun and engaging way, helping the credit union add more than 3,000 members during the course of the six-month campaign.

"Consumers are discovering the many benefits and consumer-friendly services of not-for-profit credit unions," said LFCU President/CEO Jean Yokum. "At Langley Federal Credit Union, we pride ourselves on delivering superior service and products that make sense for our membership, without burdening our members with outrageous fees."

Langley Federal Credit Union is a $1.6 billion financial institution and has been in business for 74 years. The Credit Union serves over 175,000 members and ranks in the 100 top credit unions in the nation. Visit the credit union online: http://www.langleyfcu.org

The competition is named after Louise McCarren Herring, a credit union pioneer, who believed that the operational application of credit union philosophy helped better people's lives.
