JCRC-NY CEO and NYC Public Advocate Lead Hamantaschen Crawl to Celebrate Purim

Mark Treyger and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams will sample the Purim treats from three locations, choose a favorite, and discuss how Jewish food can bring diverse communities together.

UPPER WEST SIDE, NY (03/02/2026) (readMedia)-- Mark Treyger, CEO of JCRC-NY, and Public Advocate Jumaane Williams will lead a hamantashchen crawl on the Upper West Side to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Purim. Hamantaschen are triangular filled pastries traditionally eaten during the Jewish holiday of Purim. Their three-cornered shape is said to represent the hat (or ears) of the Purim villain Haman, symbolizing the triumph of the Jewish people over the threat of annihilation as told in the Book of Esther.

Mark and the Public Advocate will be available for interviews during the crawl, which will be open to press at each location.

The goal of the hamantaschen crawl is to use food to foster understanding of Jewish identity, tradition, and values and support Jewish small businesses on the Upper West Side. At a time when much of the conversation about Jewish life in New York centers on antisemitism, including acts of hate targeting Jewish-owned businesses, JCRC-NY will celebrate moments of joy and hope. Sharing traditional Purim treats is one way to do just that.
