STATEN ISLAND, NY (12/12/2025) (readMedia)-- On Monday, Mark Treyger, CEO of JCRC-NY, and Staten Island Borough President Vito Fossella will lead a sufganiyot crawl on Staten Island to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Chanukah. Sufganiyot are deep-fried jelly doughnuts traditionally eaten on Chanukah to symbolize the Chanukah miracle, when one day of oil lasted for eight nights.
Mark and the BP will be available for interviews during the crawl, which will be open to press at each location.
Participants will sample sufganiyot at Island Kosher and JJC of Staten Island, learn about the meaning of Chanukah, and decide which of the jelly doughnuts is the yummiest. The goal of the sufganiyot crawl is to use food to foster understanding of Jewish identity, tradition, and values and support Jewish small businesses on Staten Island. At a time when much of the conversation about Jewish life in New York centers on antisemitism, including acts of hate targeting Jewish-owned businesses, JCRC-NY will celebrate moments of joy and hope. Sharing traditional Chanukah treats is one way to do just that.
