JCRC-NY Co-Sponsors Backpack and School Supply Giveaway with Council Member Linda Lee Ahead of New School Year

QUEENS, NY (08/26/2025) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday morning, P.S. 133 in Bellerose, Queens, hosted a successful backpack and school supply giveaway event. The giveaway was co-sponsored by Council Member Linda Lee, the first Korean American ever elected to the NYC Council, and JCRC-NY, a proud partner of the UJA Federation of New York. Students in the Council Member's district received free, brand-new school supplies-essential items that are often out of reach for many families-just in time for the new school year. The event was a booming success, with hundreds of students receiving free, new backpacks filled with essential school supplies like notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, glue sticks, erasers, binders, and rulers.

The nonprofit Supplies for Success generously provided 300 backpacks for the co-sponsors and volunteers to distribute. JCRC-NY board members Jonathan Greenspun and Judy Baum, who is also the government affairs committee co-chair, helped distribute the backpacks alongside other JCRC-NY staff, engaging with the pre-K-5th grade students and their families.

"This event reflects the heart of JCRC-NY's mission to build bridges across diverse communities and build a more interconnected New York for all," said JCRC-NY CEO Mark Treyger. "The event also highlights JCRC-NY's commitment to support students, educators, and school communities. As a former educator, I know how meaningful these events are for families, and we are proud to continue building community alongside Council Member Lee within her great and diverse district. Thank you to Council Member Linda Lee and Supplies for Success for helping us ensure that hundreds of children can step into the classroom ready to learn and thrive, and to P.S. 133 for hosting such a successful event."

"As our students begin a new school year, it's essential that they are equipped with the tools they need to achieve their goals and enjoy meaningful educational experiences," said Council Member Linda Lee. "Thank you to the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York and P.S. 133 for partnering with our office and providing backpacks and supplies that will help students succeed and grow into the leaders of tomorrow."
