JCRC-NY to Host Elected Officials and Interfaith Leaders at Matzah Bakery Experience in Crown Heights
BROOKLYN, NY (03/16/2026) (readMedia)-- On Tuesday, the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York (JCRC-NY) will convene a hands-on matzah bakery experience in Crown Heights. The event will give attendees an opportunity to explore the traditions and significance of Passover and understand how matzah symbolizes the Jewish people's journey from slavery in ancient Egypt to freedom.
During the event, participants will be guided through the intricate process of matzah-making-from mixing the dough to carefully monitoring baking times to ensure the matzah, the unleavened bread Jews ate during their hasty departure from Egypt, does not rise. The workshop is more than just a baking lesson; it is a celebration of heritage that brings community members together through history and tradition.
The gathering is part of JCRC-NY's growing "Babka Diplomacy" approach, which uses Jewish food traditions as a bridge to bring together civic, faith, and community leaders. By sharing experiences like baking matzah or enjoying classic Jewish foods such as babka, JCRC-NY creates spaces where neighbors from different backgrounds can connect, learn about Jewish identity and history, and build relationships rooted in understanding and respect. In a city as diverse as New York, these moments of cultural exchange help strengthen the bonds that sustain our shared civic life.
