Jefferson University Students Saranyu Ravi and Jennifer Tran Win Third Place In National Competition

PHILADELPHIA, PA (12/15/2011)(readMedia)-- Jefferson School of Pharmacy students Saranyu Ravi and Jennifer Tran were awarded third prize in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Clinical Skills Competition (CSC). The national competition was a prominent feature of the ASHP 46th Midyear Clinical Meeting held in New Orleans, December 4–8, 2011. This meeting represents the single largest annual gathering of pharmacists in the world.

The CSC is an interactive, team-based analysis of clinical scenarios for hospital/health-system pharmacists to help patients achieve positive healthcare outcomes. Preliminary competitions are held on college campuses around the nation. The national competition takes place at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting.Each school of pharmacy is invited to send one team of two students.

This year's competition case focused on severe pre-eclampsia.Ravi and Tranassessed the current drug therapy regimen and designed and recommended a written care for this patient case. Teams scoring in the top 10 participated in the final round of competition which includes verbally presenting the case and defending their recommendations which were then judged by a panel of content experts. This year 115 schools of pharmacy competed.

In a joint message Ms. Ravi and Ms. Tran said "We viewed this as a win not just for ourselves but for Jefferson School of Pharmacy (JSP) as well. As we responded to every problem in the pharmaceutical care plan, we drew on insights from every professor we had in our four years at JSP."

In addition to representation in the CSC, Jefferson School of Pharmacy students also presented six research posters at the meeting. Those participating in presentations included Carla Eisenstein, Sarah Mahon, Elizabeth Mearns, Sejal Mistry, Anny Nguyen, Fred Nguyen, Lynn Nguyen, Whitney Saulsberry, Chris Silag, and Carmelina Staino. Furthermore, Saranyu Ravi chairs a national ASHP student committee and Sarah Mahon serves on a national student committee.

Faculty making presentations at the meeting included Mary Hess, PharmD, Cindy Sanoski, PharmD, and Jason Schafer, PharmD. Faculty member Gerald Meyer, PharmD, represents Thomas Jefferson University's School of Pharmacy as an officer and board member of ASHP.
