FULTON, MO (06/07/2012)(readMedia)-- Jessica Bargate of Jefferson City, Mo., was recognized for her academic dedication and campus involvement during the Academic Convocation and Co-Curricular Honors Banquet at William Woods University.

Bargate, who graduated in May with a major in graphic design and minors in business administration and studio art, received the prestigious honor of the Faculty Award. This award is given to the graduate magna cum laude or summa cum laude "who, in the estimation of the faculty of William Woods, has shown exemplary devotion and commitment to the life of the mind."

Bargate was also named Distinguished Scholar in Graphic Design. The faculty of various disciplines at William Woods have the opportunity each spring to designate one graduating senior as a Distinguished Scholar. A minimum grade point average of 3.4 is required, but the faculty may consider other relevant academic factors and variables in the selection process.

Along with her academic recognitions, she received the Amy Shelton McNutt Award. The McNutt Award is given to the graduate whose consistency of purpose and selfless devotion to service were contributed without thought of reward and who best exemplifies the spirit and qualities of Amy Shelton McNutt, an alumna of William Woods in whose honor the award was named.

In addition, Bargate was one of 15 William Woods University students named to the 2012 edition of "Who's Who among Students in American Universities and Colleges" based on being an outstanding campus leader. A campus nominating committee and editors of the annual directory choose the students based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.

By being listed in "Who's Who," she joins an elite group of students from more than 2,300 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states. Outstanding students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1934.

Bargate has volunteered as coordinator of the Therapeutic Art Project in Joplin, Mo., and serves as vice president of membership for the Capital Toastmasters, an organization dedicated to developing public speaking and leadership skills through practice and feedback in local clubs.

Her on-campus roles have included Alpha Chi Omega sorority, phonathon supervisor, Multicultural Affairs Club president, co-founder and president of WWU Art Club, vice president of marketing for Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honorary, and chair of Student Assembly.
