ROCHESTER, NY (02/07/2013)(readMedia)-- Nazareth College is proud to announce that Campus Safety Officer Jon Fernando has received the College's 2012 Officer of the Year award, along with the 2012 Firefighter of the Year award for the West Henrietta Fire Department (a volunteer company). He was also ranked number one for total number of fire calls for his battalion. Fernando has served as a patrol officer at Nazareth College for five years, while carrying out his passion for civic service as a firefighter and emergency medical technician (EMT) with the Henrietta Fire District. In addition to these endeavors, he is currently in the process of becoming a volunteer lieutenant for the Henrietta Fire District.

Fernando, a native of Albany, gained his criminal justice degree from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where his spirit of civic engagement was born after becoming an EMT at RIT during his college years. The honor of being named the West Henrietta Firefighter of the Year is owed much to Fernando's response to a call on April 5, 2012 when he helped perform CPR and used a defibrillator to save a woman's life.
