CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (03/26/2011)(readMedia)-- The Cedar Rapids Hockey Association will host the Jr. Roughrider Classic this weekend. Games begin Friday, January 21 and run through Sunday, January 23 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena located at 1100 Rockford Road Southwest. Attendance is free of charge. The arena is home to the USHL Cedar Rapids Roughriders, presently placing 2nd in the Eastern Conference behind Green Bay.
The tournament will host teams from eight cities including Iowa City, Dubuque, Waterloo, Mason City, Des Moines, Sioux City, Omaha, NE and Peoria, IL. Tournament organizers expect approximately 200 players competing at the Mite (ages 6-8) and Squirt (ages 9-11) levels. Games will be held on both the Olympic and NHL sheets of ice with some running concurrently.
The Jr. Roughrider Classic opens Friday at 6:00pm with the Cedar Rapids Jr. Roughrider Squirt B team facing off against the Iowa City Blizzard Squirt B team. Full schedule information is available www.juniorroughriders.com.
CRHA President Jill Johnson believes this weekend's tournament will provide visiting teams with a well-organized and competitive hockey match in an outstanding arena environment. In the past year, player participation has grown to include a Bantam team and an additional Mite team. The organization also added a Growth and Retention Coordinator role to the board this season. Jeff Winders leads the charge to implement strategies for driving new player interest.
Throughout this tournament weekend, volunteers will staff a concessions stand featuring beverages, snacks and a small selection of hot food items. Proceeds will benefit youth hockey programs.
Used hockey equipment will be for sale in the party rooms located to the left of the front entrance, near concessions. Themed prize baskets including "Pampered Mom," "Movie Night" and "Hockey Little Sister" will be offered through a raffle. Raffle tickets will be available for $1 each.
The top two ranking teams from each level will receive trophies at the conclusion of the round-robin tournament.
The public is encouraged to attend as a show of support for youth athletics and the coordinated efforts of many volunteers working to distinguish Cedar Rapids as a quality hockey community.
The team is sponsored by Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 125. A full list of generous sponsors can be found within the program guide, available during the tournament.
