POTSDAM, NY (04/23/2013)(readMedia)-- SUNY Potsdam student Katelyn Komsa of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was recently among those honored with the 2013 Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence. Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the awards to 243 students at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center on April 4.
"The students we honor today have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists, and community volunteers," said Chancellor Zimpher. "By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus, and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride. Congratulations to all the students being recognized today."
The SUNY Potsdam award recipients included Katelyn Komsa, a senior from Sault St. Marie, Ontario, whose major is biology. Komsa has been a member of the Bears women's ice hockey team for four years, and was named captain this past season.
She is an active member of SUNY Potsdam's Biology Club and Pre-Health Club, and has been inducted into four honor societies, including Beta Beta Beta, Phi Eta Sigma, Omicron Delta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Her community service experience includes participation in the Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention Awareness, the Walkin' for Willz Juvenile Diabetes Walk, the Big Brother/Big Sister Meet a Bear Day, Potsdam community clean-ups and the Special Olympics. Additionally, Komsa has been an employee of the College's Shane T. Shaul Fitness Center for four years.
"Receiving the Chancellor's Award, in my opinion, has been the most prestigious recognition I have been awarded in my scholastic career thus far, and I feel so honored and privileged to be able to represent SUNY Potsdam in this respect," said Komsa.
The Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to honor students who excel academically and show involvement in leadership roles, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.
