COLCHESTER, VT (08/05/2011)(readMedia)-- Katherine Hackett, a cum laude 2011 graduate of Saint Michael's College with a degree in sociology/anthropology, who grew up in Huntington, N.Y., was named Admission Counselor at Saint Michael's in Burlington, Vt. She began at the college in June. Ms. Hackett was awarded the Katherine Fairbanks Award at commencement which is given annually to the top woman graduate in the class.
"I worked in admissions as a student here, and very much enjoyed talking with visiting families and prospective students, so I was thrilled to get this position in the school I love so much," Ms. Hackett said. She will be traveling to talk with students and parents at college fairs and in high schools in her travel territory which includes Connecticut, Western Massachusetts, and Long Island, N.Y., which is the area of her upbringing.
Campus work
A very active student at Saint Michael's, Ms. Hackett served as office manager for the student activities office from January 2009 till she graduated in May of 2011. In this capacity she supervised student workers, managed Eddies, the student lounge, and organized major events including New Student Orientation, Senior Week and Family Weekend. She was a campus tour guide for visiting families for three years, and coordinator of pre-orientation weekend for three years. She also served as an executive in the student government filling the office of Secretary of Academics, and in that role she started the 24-hour study-space initiative.
Volunteer work
Ms. Hackett volunteered for many programs in the Saint Michael's MOVE (Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts) office, serving as a Core Team member and organizing the Best Buddies program, for which she increased participation dramatically. She did extended-service trips to Hartford, Conn., East Slidell, Louisiana, and the Dominican Republic.
She also took on the Penguin Plunge fund-raiser for Vermont Special Olympics and increased participation every year for three years. As a fluent speaker of Spanish, Ms. Hackett was able to be an effective volunteer working with children with disabilities during her study abroad semester in the Dominican Republic.
Ms. Hackett, now a resident of Winooski, Vt., is the daughter of William and Madelaine Hackett of Huntington L.I.
