LATHAM, NY (04/02/2013)(readMedia)-- Division of Military and Naval Affairs employee Katharine Keller, a resident of Delmar, has been awarded the agency's Certificate of Achievement in recognition of her service as the agency responded tto help New Yorkers recover from Superstorm Sandy  in November 2012

Keller, the office manager for the state's 2200-strong New York Naval Militia, put in extra hours as the state mobilized more than 200 members of the force for service in the days after the storm hit New York.

The Naval Militia is composed of members of the Navy and Marine Corps Reserve who also volunteer to perform state active duty when ordered by the governor. The force provides trained manpower and a force of nine patrol boats for use by the state.

Keller put in extra hours handing the functions required in order to mobilize Sailors and Marines and also continued to process New York Naval Militia member's education benefits documents. New York Naval Militia members obtain state assistance to attend State University of New York and City University of New York schools.

Keller also volunteered to work with the Division of Military and Naval Affairs budget and accounting office to ensure that the more than 5000 members of the New York Army and Air National Guard, as well as the Naval Militia and New York Guard, a state defense force, were paid in a timely manner for their service during the storm response.

Keller and her husband James, who is a member of the New York Naval Militia, have two sons and a daughter.
