CAZENOVIA, NY (05/12/2010)(readMedia)-- Three Cazenovia College students were honored by CAZ ACTION/Bridges, which sponsors the College's Substance Abuse Task Force, for posters designed for the Task Force's 2010 Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest. All three were members of computer art classes taught by Daniel Canter and Andrea Trask, both adjunct visual communications instructors at the College.
Third place went to Alanna Peck, of Kingston, N.Y., who is majoring in fashion design. Of her design, she says, "When we first received the assignment, I had no idea what I was going to do for the poster. I went through several ideas for the project until I finally settled on this image. The girl is vomiting up her hopes, her dreams, what makes her special. This struck a chord with me because she is giving up everything that is unique about her in order to drink - which is completely wrong. The drinking age is 21 for a reason and to me, if this girl in the image continues her actions she will be giving up everything."
Melissa Clarke, STOP ACT coordinator for CAZ ACTION/Bridges, and the group's liaison with Cazenovia College, says, "We appreciate all the students' hard work, which is invaluable to us. Many of the posters will be used for future promotions and events."
First place winner is Devinne McCarthy, of Norfolk, Mass., who is majoring in liberal studies. The second place entry came from Christopher Lovern, of Alden, N.Y., who is majoring in environmental studies, specializing in environmental policy.
Idonas Hughes, associate dean for student development and coordinator for judicial affairs, is the campus representative for CAZ ACTION. "I attend the monthly meetings as campus representative," he says. "We combine our efforts to address the issues of substance use and abuse, and plan campus programs for the National Alcohol Awareness Week in October and Alcohol Awareness Month each April. We are also concerned with other addictive behaviors like gambling."
