Langley FCU Recognized for Organizing, Funding Trip to D.C. for World War II Veterans

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (12/22/2011)(readMedia)-- Langley Federal Credit Union has won 3rd Place in the state Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program for credit unions. The Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Virginia Credit Union League and the Credit Union National Association, honors credit unions for their involvement in community projects and activities.

LFCU raised more than $20,500 to fund an entire Honor Flight Network trip from Hampton Roads to Washington D.C., allowing four busloads of World War II veterans to see the World War II Memorial and other sites in the nation's capital.

The fundraiser kicked off in April 2010, and by October, through bake sales by branches, "casual-dress day" contributions from staff, contributions from members, independent fundraisers held by third-party organizations such as a car wash by the senior class of a local high school, and many other avenues, the credit union had raised the money necessary to fund the trip.

"As a credit union dedicated to helping members of the military and the military community, Langley Federal Credit Union was proud to be able to assist Honor Flight Network to reach out to WWII Veterans and their families," says Langley Federal Credit Union President/CEO Jean Yokum. "It was rewarding to see the veterans enjoy their day in D.C. and to know that their sacrifice to their country is not forgotten."
