Lawmakers, Advocates to Announce Research Showing Brooklyn Families Could Save $140 On Bills w/ NY HEAT Act!

BROOKLYN, NY (03/07/2024) (readMedia)-- Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Assembly Members Latrice Walker, Monique Chandler-Waterman and Phara Souffrant Forrest, will join with residents and advocates outside Borough Hall. The group will share new data from WIN Climate and NY Renews showing how much Brooklyn residents could save on their energy bills if lawmakers include the NY HEAT Act (A4592-B / S2016-B) in this year's budget. As Con Edison and National Grid pursue gas rate hikes that will cost some customers nearly $50 more each month and raise others' bills by more than 17%, NY lawmakers have an opportunity to protect families by passing the NY HEAT Act and putting a limit on household utility bills to 6% of a family's income.

In addition to protecting families from rising energy costs, the NY HEAT Act will also kickstart New York's transition from the outdated, expensive fracked gas system accelerating the effects of climate change and disproportionately hurting Brooklyn communities. Governor Hochul embraced key parts of the NY HEAT Act in her Executive Budget proposal, and now lawmakers have an opportunity to provide relief for New Yorkers by including the full bill in their one-house budgets this month.
