WALLA WALLA, WA (03/06/2012)(readMedia)-- Simerun Singh of Lawrence recently presented her research at a press conference at Whitman College on Thursday, Feb. 16.

Singh was one of fifteen students participating in a research course at Whitman College called "The State of the State for Washington Latinos." Students in this course conducted academic and community-based research in one of five different areas related to the relationship between Walla Walla Latinos and their surrounding community.

Her project, entitled "Cultural Competency in Walla Walla Public Schools," looked into the ways in which the school district could better affirm Latino students' culture in order to give them more opportunities to succeed and get involved.

Whitman College has been conducting "State of the State" research since 2005.

Singh, the daughter of Mininder Kaur and Paramjit Bhatia, is a 2008 graduate of Lawrence High School. She is currently a senior politics major at Whitman.
