Americans spend roughly $9 billion dollars a year on so-called "conflict diamonds." These diamonds are used by militants in Africa to pay for wars that have destroyed the lives of millions of people. According to The New York Times, Africa mines 65% of all the diamonds sold in the world.
The film "Blood Diamond" (2006) illustrates the consequences and complexities of the illicit global diamond industry within the broader context of transnationalism. It demonstrates the impact of the diamond trade, independence movements, child soldiering, government corruption in Sierra Leone, the United Nations, and international norms on a deeply personal level as experienced through a diamond smuggler (Leonardo DiCaprio), fisherman (Djimon Hounsou), and a globe-trekking journalist (Jennifer Connelly).
MONEY is a year-long integrated series of guest speakers, roundtable discussions, films, and courses that consider society's idea of money. It will involve presentations on problems such as unemployment, poverty, and the gender wage gap, as well as discussions on tax policy, the job market and entrepreneurship, and finally a theoretical consideration of the very idea of money, the ideology of the free market, and the morality and theology of capitalism.
