PATCHOGUE, NY (08/22/2008)(readMedia)-- To the Editor:
Next weekend marks Labor Day, the traditional end of summer. And so, another summer goes by where our do-nothing Congress again failed to provide a solution to a cause of constant consternation... helicopter traffic.
Sure, my opponent will pay lip service to "addressing the issue," stopping by for cursory visits to town hall meetings on the issue, and doing just enough to lead some ill-informed constituents to believe that he's actively engaging the issue. But he has not done enough, and we must stop passing responsibility on this hot potato.
We must support flight plans over the Long Island Sound and the Atlantic. Where land overflight occurs, helicopters and planes must maintain a cruising altitude above 2500 feet. The increased traffic this summer over areas including the North Fork is entirely unacceptable. And routes should alternate to ensure certain areas don't receive undue burden.
My opponent, a member of the House Transportation Committee, is well positioned to have made things happen here, to compel the FAA to act, only he chooses not to because no one's stood up to his elitist principles.
The truth is that my opponent funds his campaign on the support of the airline industry and flying aficionados. This, in a nutshell, represents everything that is wrong in politics. Congressional Representatives must stand up for everyone regardless of whether they fill their coffers.
As I call on my opponent to do the right thing, you can rest assured, that after I'm elected, my fellow Members of Congress will file noise complaints against me, because I won't stop buzzing until something gets done.
