Lillian Roberts re-elected for a fifth term as Executive Director of District Council 37, AFSCME

ALBANY, NY (11/29/2012)(readMedia)-- LILLIAN ROBERTS was re-elected, unanimously and unopposed, to a fifth term as Executive Director of District Council 37, the city's largest municipal employee union representing 121,000 members and 50,000 retirees, at a meeting of the DC 37 Delegates on Tuesday, November 27.

Also re-elected, unanimously and unopposed, were DC 37 President Eddie Rodriguez (president of Local 1549 Clerical Administrative Employees) and DC 37 Treasurer Maf Misbah Uddin (president of Local 1407 NYC Accountants, Statisticians and Actuaries).

DC 37 Secretary Cliff Koppleman will face a runoff election at the DC 37 Delegates' meeting on January 22, 2013.

Twenty local presidents on the Members First slate were elected to the District Council 37 Executive Board.

"I am humbled and honored to be re-elected Executive Director of District Council 37," Ms. Roberts said. "I am very grateful to the many who continue to place their trust in me. As I begin my fifth term, I pledge to continue our fight to protect the interests of all of our members.

"In light of the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, I refuse to see our members' hard-won advances ripped from them by those who disparage and disregard their dedication and determination to provide excellent services.

"Our union will continue to fight for a fair and equitable contract that allows our members and their families to live in dignity and security. We will stand up against efforts to destroy the Civil Service law and fight privatization that replaces public employees with high-priced consultants and contractors and opens the door to corruption and bias and an inevitable decline in city services.

"We are dedicated to the struggle for decent jobs, fairness in the workplace, and justice and opportunity for all people in our city.

"I have spent my life in this union working and fighting for our members. I can look back with pride on the many advances we have won. I can also look ahead to the goals we will achieve if we remain united."
