Local resident, DJ Washington, receives alumni award at Union College

BARBOURVILLE, KY (10/11/2013)(readMedia)--  DJ Washington led a very successful career as an undergraduate at Union College, Ky. However, he has also been very successful in the time since he graduated.

In light of this success, Washington, who graduated from Union in 2003, was recently awarded the Rising Star Award as part of the Union College Alumni Banquet and Awards Ceremony. The ceremony was held Saturday, Oct. 5 on Union's campus as part of Union College's annual homecoming weekend. Washington was joined by 7 individuals and 2 teams who were also recognized.

As a student at Union, Washington was the student associate trustee on the Union College board of trustees; served the Student Government Association first as the Vice President for Enrollment and then as President; played on the men's basketball team, where he was three-year letter winner and two-year captain; was awarded the Rena Miliken Award, given to the upperclassman with the most potential for future business success, and the Danny Drinkard Award, presented to a student-athlete who demonstrates leadership.

This success continued after Washington graduated and pursued first his Master of Arts in Public Relations and Sports Communication from Ball State University, and now his doctoral degree in Higher Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Kansas.

His success is mirrored in his career, where he currently is employed as the Vice President of Collegiate Relations at Career Athletics, and exclusive athlete network that helps student athletes make networking relationships and find resources for career education and job opportunities. In this position, Washington has not only educated more than 275,000 student athletes, he has also elevated himself to a position of high-regard as a notable speaker.

The Rising Star Award, created in 2002, is given to outstanding Union alumni who have graduated within the past 15 years. Honorees were involved on campus while students, preferable in leadership roles, and are enjoying career success and continually give back to their community and Union College.
