CANTON, NY (09/08/2017) New York Lt. Gov. Kathy C. Hochul will visit SUNY Canton as part of a statewide celebration of the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in New York state.
Hochul will discuss the role of women in politics and the voting rights movement at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center, Room 212.
She is the chair of the New York State Women's Suffrage 100th Anniversary Commemoration Commission, whose mission is to educate the public about this transformative moment in American history.
"As New Yorkers, we have so much to be proud of," said Hochul in a statement on the commission's website. "We are living in one of the most progressive states in the nation, and we are living out the legacy of leaders who started the women's rights movement in Seneca Falls."
The state celebration began early this year and will continue throughout 2020, which marks a century after the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
"We are pleased to welcome Lt. Gov. Hochul to campus to help us celebrate this milestone as well as the accomplisments of women and their contributions to our history," said SUNY Canton President Zvi Szafran. "As a leader and advocate for women and families across the state, Lt. Gov. Hochul can inspire the next generation of young women to get involved in politics and achieve great things."
SUNY Canton will also welcome three other female trailblazers in New York state politics as part of its Constitution Day celebration. State Sen. Betty Little (R-Queensbury), Assemblywoman Addie A.E. Jenne (D-Theresa) and Waddington Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada will speak at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 18, in the Richard W. Miller Campus Center's Kingston Theater.
Both events are free and open to the public.
