CAZENOVIA, NY (04/24/2013)(readMedia)-- The Cazenovia College Art Gallery in Reisman Hall is hosting exhibitions of work by students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program through the close of the semester. Currently, Bachelor of Fine Arts degree candidates from the Studio Art and Photography programs are showing their work, which includes photographs, photographic installation, sound installation, sculpture, painting and printmaking. The exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.
M. Sawyer Ballance of Spartanburg, S.C., is majoring in studio art specializing in painting and sculpture, with a minor in art history. Ballance is a graduate of Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, S.C. His exhibition, titled Moon Baby & Halo Heart, runs from May 1 to 4, and has opening and closing receptions: May 1, 4 - 6 p.m. and May 4, 3 - 5 p.m.
He writes, "My paintings are a blend of classical motifs, symbols and romantic atmospheres that deal specifically with matters of the heart: lust, love, transcendence, betrayal, sex, conflict, and the passage of time. However, there is also an element of more popular imagery and contemporary mediums (i.e. glitter, aerosol, and geometry) which exist in order to further develop a dialogue on the ethereal and more non-tangible aspects of love.
"As classical symbolism meets contemporary imagery and abstraction in my work, the dichotomy between the heart and mind can be observed and thus be effectual toward the synthesis of the two. The symbols that exist in my work act not so much as dictators of interpretation but as guides toward a mutual or sympathetic transcendence, catharsis or enlightenment."
The Cazenovia College Art Gallery in Reisman Hall, 6 Sullivan St., is on the corner of Sullivan and Seminary streets in Cazenovia.
