Canalway Improvements in Phoenix on Oswego Canal

ALBANY, NY (11/15/2010)(readMedia)--

The New York State Canal Corporation, the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the Village of Phoenix, Oswego County, officially announce the Henley Park, North and Lock Island waterfront improvements along the Oswego Canal at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16. (See directions below.)

Attending the opening will be Canal Corporation Director Carmella R. Mantello; Phoenix Mayor Anthony Fratto; Russell S. Andrews, Vice Chairman of Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, and other state and local officials.

The projects, funded through grants from both the New York State Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, enhances boat and kayak launching facilities on North Island; shoreline stabilization and trail improvements on Lock Island; and painting of the Bridgehouse.

Members of the media, including photographers, are invited to attend.

Directions to North and Lock Islands:

FROM THE EAST: Take the New York State Thruway I-90 westbound, toward Buffalo. At Interchange 34A, merge onto I-481 northbound, toward "Oswego/Watertown" (6.7 miles). Exit LEFT nto NY-481 northbound (12.2 miles). Go to NY-264 exit via Exit 14, toward "Phoenix/Mexico" (0.3 miles). Turn left onto NY-264 (1.5 miles). Turn right onto "Culvert St/NY-264" (0.1 miles). Cross drawbridge and turn right onto North Island.

FROM THE WEST: Take the New York State Thruway I-90 eastbound toward Albany. At Interchange 39, merge onto NY-690N, toward "Baldwinsville/Fulton" (8.4 miles). Merge onto "NY-48/Oswego Road) (2.1 miles). Turn right onto "Lamson Rd/CR-29" (3.1 miles). Cross the bridge and turn left before the drawbridge onto North Island.

From the parking lot, walk into the park.
