ATLANTA, GA (05/16/2013)(readMedia)-- Macon native Janet Wood, an Oglethorpe University senior and psychology major, received the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award at the university's annual Honors and Awards Ceremony on April 12, 2013.
Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation selected Oglethorpe University in 2011 to be among a select group of universities to have the honor of presenting the highly prized Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards to two deserving seniors.The awards are given annually to a man and a woman whose remarkable character and dedication to service sets them apart as examples to others.
Janet graduated from Macon's Central High School, where she discovered her love for community involvement through the IB program and her membership in Key Club. While at Oglethorpe, Janet has been deeply involved in campus life. She is an active member of Alpha Phi Omega, the university's service fraternity, in which she has held multiple officer positions including president. At the end of her presidency, APO honored her with the Distinguished Service Key, the organization's highest award. Janet also has served as a senator for Student Government Association and was a member of the student literary magazine staff. She became a sister of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority during her sophomore year, and in her junior year, she was inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society in recognition of her campus leadership. Janet has served as a resident assistant both for Oglethorpe and for EF (Education First), an international education provider located on campus. She also worked in the Office of Experiential Learning and in the University Library. During her final semester, Janet interned at Pegasus Creative, Oglethorpe's student communications agency. After graduation, Janet plans to pursue a career in public relations.
The Algernon Sydney Sullivan and Mary Mildred Sullivan Awards were created nearly 100 years ago to honor the service of the husband and wife for whom the awards are named. Sullivan Awards, represented by a bronze medallion, are highly prized. Previous recipients who have proven their ability to live up to the standards set by this honor range from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to Fred Rogers, noted star of children's television.
