AUGUSTA, ME (05/02/2010)(readMedia)-- Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Goodheart retired from the U.S. Army on March 31, 2010, with more than 36 years of distinguished service.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1973, serving on active duty with the 10th Special Forces Group in Heidelberg, Germany. He joined the Maine Army National Guard in October 1980, serving as a Drill Sergeant at the Maine Military Academy. He rose to the rank of Master Sergeant before attending Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1990, and graduating as a Second Lieutenant.
He served in various leadership positions within the Maine Army National Guard throughout his career, to include Platoon Leader and Executive Officer with Bravo Company, 172nd Infantry (Mountain); Commander, 1136th Transportation Company; and Assistant Operations Officer and Logistics Officer, 52nd Troop Command.
Lieutenant Colonel Goodheart began a very successful tour with the Maine National Guard Counterdrug Program in August 1993, and in April 2004 he began a six-year stretch as the Counterdrug Coordinator. During his tenure, Maine's Counterdrug Program was recognized as one of the best in the country.
His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit; Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Parachutist Badge; Air Assault Badge; and Mountain Warfare Badge.
