MILWAUKEE, WI (09/26/2011)(readMedia)-- Marquette University student Taylor Trovillion has been named the new chair of the March of Dimes National Youth Council, a select group of 19 college students across the country who devote a significant amount of time to the March of Dimes on a regional and national level.
Trovillion, a senior in the Diederich College of Communication was elected to the March of Dimes National Youth Council because of her demonstrated leadership ability and dedicated service to the March of Dimes Foundation. Members of the National Youth Council have volunteered extensively for the March of Dimes and will have opportunities in the upcoming year to work with national partners, create advocacy initiatives and develop collegiate programs to support the March of Dimes mission.
The March of Dimes is a leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health; its purpose is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
Trovillion was born prematurely, weighing three pounds. Her interest in the March of Dimes began in high school, where she served as a member and chair of the San Diego County Chain Reaction Council, a high school advocacy group for the March of Dimes. Trovillion has been involved with the March of Dimes in a leadership capacity for the past six years, this being her fourth year serving on the National Youth Council.
"I was humbled by the confidence my peers had in me to take on this important leadership role. My work with the March of Dimes has taught me that I can take my communication education from Marquette and merge it with my passion for health and political advocacy," Trovillion said.
Trovillion is majoring in corporate and broadcast and electronic communications with a minor in political science. She spent last semester in Washington D.C. interning with a senator through the Les Aspin Center for Government. While there Trovillion had the opportunity to study the legislative process and learn how organizations like the March of Dimes can make a change in the lawmaking process. After graduation in May, Trovillion hopes to combine her love for the press, public relations and politics and join a political campaign, potentially in her hometown of San Diego, where a mayoral race will be underway.
Locally, Trovillion volunteers with the Milwaukee chapter of the March of Dimes, serves as a member on the Wisconsin board for the March of Dimes and sits on the March of Dimes Wisconsin Chapter's Public Affairs Committee. On average she spends about 15 hours a week doing March of Dimes-related work.
At Marquette Trovillion is an active member of Pi Beta Phi, Circle K, Lambda Pi Eta and Alpha Sigma Nu. She also volunteers with Campus Ministry.
