Mazda's Takeri Concept Makes North American Debut in New York

BRUNSWICK, MAINE (04/20/2012)(readMedia)-- Following the March arrival of Mazda's 2013 CX-5 crossover, a model inspired by the automaker's KODO design theme, driving enthusiasts recently got a look at how the next-generation Mazda6 might incorporate that style at Mazda dealerships. The automaker's newest KODO-inspired vehicle, the Takeri Concept, made its North American debut at the New York International Auto Show earlier this month, previewing the 2014 Mazda6 going on sale in early 2013.

Mazda's overarching KODO design philosophy aims to evoke strength, speed and power, which are communicated on the Takeri Concept through its swooping hood, muscular stance and crisp lines. Pulling together those elements is Mazda's new corporate face, which includes an eagle-eyed five-point grille and a bladed front end. The Takeri also fully features Mazda's new fuel-efficient SKYACTIV technologies, including a SKYACTIV-D clean diesel engine.

"The styling of the Takeri Concept is stunning, and even if it gets toned down a bit for the new Mazda6, it'll still be head and shoulders above the predictable designs of other midsize sedans," said Jeanette Downing, general manager of Goodwin Mazda, a Brunswick, Maine Mazda dealer. "U.S. buyers will be offered a gasoline engine instead of a diesel, at least initially, but the new SKYACTIV technology will still allow the new Mazda6 to target best-in-class fuel economy."

The 2013 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover is currently the only Mazda on sale with an entire suite of SKYACTIV technologies, which span the engine, transmissions, chassis and body. The 2014 Mazda6 will be the second to market, featuring a SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine and two transmission options. Drivers will be able to choose between the SKYACTIV-MT six-speed manual and the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic, meaning they'll save on fuel regardless of preference.

Another fuel-saving technology featured in the Takeri Concept that could make it into the 2014 Mazda6 is i-ELOOP, the first-ever capacitor-based regenerative braking system. Mazda's i-ELOOP takes the electricity converted from kinetic energy during deceleration and stores it in capacitors. The system then uses that electricity to power vehicle equipment, reducing the load on the engine and improving fuel economy by as much as 10 percent.

While it does not feature SKYACTIV technology, the current 2012 Mazda6 does provide drivers with a fuel-efficient engine option: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder netting up to 31 mpg on the highway. For those who prefer to inject more power into their everyday driving, an available 3.7-liter V6 engine delivers 272 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. All models offer automatic transmissions with a manual-shift mode for increased control, while four-cylinder Mazda6 models are also available with a six-speed manual.

"The Mazda6 has always been designed to give buyers an option that is more attractive and more fun to drive than your average midsize sedan," added Downing. "Many of the attributes that drivers love about the 2012 model, like its superb handling and drivability, will carry over into the next generation. Meanwhile, its style and fuel efficiency will be taken to a new level."
