RALEIGH, NC (10/20/2010)(readMedia)-- The North Carolina National Guard's Adjutant General was promoted to major general on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in downtown Raleigh, N.C.
Governor Bev Perdue and Deana Lusk pinned the two-star rank on Army Maj. Gen. Gregory A. Lusk, the commander of the North Carolina National Guard, in the historic Old House Chamber at the State Capitol building. The North Carolina Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall, issued the oath of office to Lusk, with Deana by his side.
"This man is a Soldier's general," said Perdue. "He understands what it takes to serve in the battlefield and in the community."
Also present for the ceremony was the Secretary N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety, Reuben F. Young; U.S. Representative, 2nd District of North Carolina Bob Etheridge; Army Maj. Gen. William E. Ingram, Jr., former North Carolina Adjutant General; and other military and government officials.
"All my life, I have wanted to be part of something great," said Lusk. "Indeed, I am so fortunate and blessed by this opportunity to continue being part of something great – our North Carolina National Guard.
"I am excited for the future," he added. "Together, as one team, let's get started!"
Lusk assumed command of the nearly 12,000 Soldiers and Airmen of the N.C. National Guard on Oct. 1. He replaced the former adjutant general, Ingram, who had served as the N.C. National Guard's adjutant general since July 16, 2001.
Lusk was announced as the new state adjutant general by Perdue on Sept. 9. Perdue and Young both cited his strong leadership experience in commanding North Carolina's largest National Guard unit and his dedication to duty as some of the attributes considered in the decision to appoint him to the position.
