STEM, N.C. (04/29/2011)(readMedia)-- A dedication ceremony was held for a new 50-bed barracks building this morning at Camp Butner here today.

The new building is in support of the development of Camp Butner's 67-acre, 750-personnel troop Operational Readiness Training Center (ORTC) into reaching Combat Training Center status. With 6,500 square feet, four open-bay rooms, and one four-person command room, the building is the second facility in a series of dedicated lodging structures on Camp Butner.

U.S. Representative Brad Miller, who helped secure $1.4 million in federal military construction funds needed to build the barracks, joined the Guard leadership in the ribbon cutting ceremony.

"Combat training is of no small consequence," said Miller, representative of North Carolina's 32nd State House District. "The amount of training here has quadrupled over the past five years. I hope the North Carolina delegation will continue to work to support you and what the nation has called for you to do."

Present at the ribbon cutting was Tom Lane, mayor of Butner; N.C. State Representative James Walker Crawford, Jr., representative of North Carolina's 32nd State House District (14); Army Col. Mark P. Nelson, the North Carolina National Guard Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Training, representing the Adjutant General of North Carolina; and Army Chief Warrant Officer Richard D. Comer, State Command Chief Warrant Officer of the North Carolina National Guard.

"To see the growth and development of Camp Butner is very exciting," said Lane. "This is a part of [Butner's] history and we look forward to supporting your role."

Once all construction is complete, the ORTC will have 14 barracks for billeting, two dining facilities, four company-level administrative work areas and a headquarters building. The ORTC provides enhanced logistical support capabilities for the North Carolina National Guard, Active Duty Armed Forces and North Carolina Law Enforcement Agencies. Camp Butner currently has 10 live-fire ranges, a medical examination center, an obstacle course, rappel tower, land navigation course, nuclear, biological and chemical training area, prisoner of war training area, unit camp sites, enemy engagement trainers, convoy training areas and multipurpose classrooms.
