NFL Star to Visit NC National Guard Mentor

RALEIGH, NC (02/24/2011)(readMedia)-- Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterback David Garrard is scheduled to visit the North Carolina National Guard's Soldiers and Airmen on Feb. 25, thanks to Sgt. 1st Class Gregory L. Bethea, of the NCNG Recruiting and Retention Battalion. Garrard is scheduled to visit with Airmen and Soldiers of the North Carolina National Guard at the Morrisville Armory, located at 2051 National Guard Drive, in Morrisville, N.C., 27623.

Raised in Durham, N.C., Garrard, a starting National Football League player on the Jacksonville Jaguars for the past eight years, graduated from Southern High School and attended East Carolina University on a football scholarship.

During high school, Garrard worked in a national retail shoe store with Bethea as his manager. The two stayed in touch over the years. When Garrard wanted to start a football/cheerleading camp for youths in North Carolina, Bethea helped out.

Garrard, diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 2004, has raised over $200,000 for Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, a group in which he is also a national spokesperson. Garrard founded the David Garrard Foundation which focuses on Crohn's Disease, Breast Cancer awareness and healthy lifestyles for kids.
