The New York Yankees logo will now decorate the winglets of the nine C-17 Globemaster III aircraft flown by the Air Guard's 105th Airlift Wing .

LATHAM, NY (10/12/2023) (readMedia)-- The New York Air National Guard's 105th Airlift Wing will unveil winglet art honoring the New York Yankees and the New York Police Department during an afternoon ceremony at Stewart Air National Guard Base on Saturday, October 14.

WHO: Representatives of the New York Yankees; Edward Caban, New York City Police Commissioner; Major General Denise Donnell, the commander of the New York Air National Guard, Brigadier General Gary R. Charlton II, the commander of the 105th Airlift Wing: Yankees ball players, police officers, and members of the 105th Airlift wing.

WHAT: A ceremony in which emblems painted on the winglets of two of the wing's C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlifters are unveiled. Winglets are the upswept end of the aircraft wing which reduce drag. The right winglet of each of the wing's nine C-17s bears a symbol commemorating the police actions on Sept. 11, 2001. The left winglet emblem is the logo of the New York Yankees which have been synonymous with New York City since 1901.

Two C-17s will be parked nose-to-nose outside the hanger with the winglet art covered. Representatives of the New York Yankees and the New York Police Department will pull the covers off unveiling the art. Reporters will also be able to interview participants in the event.

BACKGROUND:

Based at Stewart Air National Guard base outside of Newburgh, New York, the 105th Airlift Wing operates nine C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlifters which fly as part of the Air Mobility Command.

The wings over 1,300 Airmen regularly deliver critical cargo and personnel to locations around the world.

During 2022 the wing's Airmen flew 282 missions, carrying 4,415 tons of cargo and 3,511 people.

These missions ranged from carrying supplies for the Ukraine's army to transporting helicopters to Brazil for joint training, and transporting an MQ-9 Reaper and New York Air National Guard personnel to South Africa for an airshow.

Forty-nine missions were conducted, carrying 2,781 tons of cargo and 1,481 tons of cargo for Air Mobility Command. The wing also flew 161 local training missions and flew 72 Guard Lift missions transporting 2,030 people and 1,634 tons of cargo while supporting training.
