ALBANY, NY (08/31/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that construction is set to begin Monday, September 10 on a $394,000 contract to seal expressway shoulders including portions of Interstates 390, 490, 590 and Route 531 in Monroe County as part of the NY Works program.
"Governor Cuomo's NY Works program speeds up our bridge and highway reconstruction efforts and puts people back to work," Commissioner McDonald said. "The traveling public will see nearly twice as much highway work than just last year. We ask motorists to be patient and drive carefully through construction zones."
Expressway shoulders will be treated with a "fog seal" technique, a low-cost method to protect pavement by sealing off moisture. A series of moving construction vehicles will clean the shoulders and spray them with the sealant.
NY Works focuses on improving pavement that is in fair condition to good. This preventive maintenance work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Highway shoulders do not get as much wear and tear as the travel lanes and are good candidates for this type of less-expensive treatment.
During construction, the travel lane closest to the shoulder being worked on may be closed when traffic volumes are lowest for that time of day. Work will be performed between the hours of 9 a.m and 3:30 p.m. Work at all locations could be complete as early as October pending favorable weather conditions and general progress.

The construction contractor for the project is Ramsey Constructors of Lakeville, Livingston County.
Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual's driver's license.
