NYS AFL-CIO Applauds Nurses Overtime Agreement

Legislation Limits Mandatory Overtime for Nurses and Protects Patient Safety

ALBANY, NY (06/23/2008)(readMedia)-- New York State AFL-CIO President Denis Hughes today issued the following statement regarding passage of legislation by the State Senate and Assembly to curb mandatory overtime for nurses:

"Limiting mandatory overtime has always been about workplace fairness, safety and the well-being of nurses and the patients they treat.

"This legislation will ensure that patients are no longer cared for by overworked nurses, and it will allow these dedicated professionals to perform to the best of their ability.

"The New York State AFL-CIO extends its deepest thanks and appreciation to Senate Majority Leader Bruno and Assembly Speaker Silver for agreeing on this important legislation.

"We are also thankful for the Governor's active role on this most important issue."

Limiting mandatory overtime for nurses was a legislative priority issue for the 2.5 million member New York State AFL-CIO.
