NYSDOT ANNOUNCES CONTRACT AWARD FOR PHASE II OF UTICA NORTH-SOUTH ARTERIAL VIADUCT REPLACEMENT

ALBANY, NY (05/09/2014)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced the award of a $53 million contract to reconstruct the Utica North-South Arterial in the City of Utica, Oneida County. The project will replace the elevated section of State Routes 5, 8, and 12 and will address structural and geometric deficiencies, including mobility, connectivity and safety issues along the arterial

"Utica is at the beginning of an economic resurgence that will be well supported by a safer route through the city for the many residents, commuters and businesses who rely on it each day, Commissioner McDonald said. "This project will enhance mobility through the city, support economic development and provide safer access to the local community, including Downtown."

The project, which is expected to begin later this month, will include viaduct replacement and construction of a new interchange at Court Street. A new bridge will be built to carry the arterial over Court Street, and a Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) will be created where all traffic exiting or entering the arterial will be managed by a single set of traffic signals. The bridges carrying Columbia Street, Lafayette Street and Oriskany Boulevard will be replaced.

The construction contract was awarded to Sealand Contractors Corporation, from Rush, Monroe County. Work is expected to be completed in 2017.
