ALBANY, NY (11/13/2013)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced the substantial completion of the $60 million New York Route 110-Northern State Parkway Interchange replacement project in the town of Huntington, Suffolk County. The project replaced the Northern State Parkway Bridge (NSP) over Route 110, reconfigured all of its ramps, installed new sidewalks along each side of Route 110, and added a travel lane on Route 110 in each direction to benefit pedestrians and the more than 120,000 motorists who travel through the interchange each day. The project has been selected for a 2014 American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC) gold award in the transportation category.
"This award-winning project has transformed a major interchange, relieved a traffic bottleneck and created an efficient, state-of-the-art highway complex that serves one of Long Island's largest and most vital business districts," Commissioner McDonald said. "In keeping with Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Drivers First initiative, we installed a temporary bridge to accommodated Northern State Parkway traffic during construction. That minimized the project's impact on Long Island motorists and helped shorten the project's duration."
The new NY Route 110-NSP Interchange project included:
• Demolishing the old Northern State Parkway Bridge;
• Constructing a new Northern State Parkway Bridge over Route 110 with improved vertical clearance for trucks;
• Reconfiguring Northern State Parkway entrance and exit ramps to meet current standards and projected future traffic demands;
• Installing three full travel lanes in each direction on Route 110;
• Reusing granite from the old bridge in the new structure to retain the Robert Moses classic parkway features;
• Installing new drainage systems;
• Making safety and mobility improvements at the intersection of Route 110 and Old Country Road;
• Installing a continuous sidewalk network and a continuous shoulder lane for bicyclists. The work eliminated gaps in the sidewalk network and established connections to sidewalks on local streets;
• Installing bus turnouts;
• Installing new crosswalks and pedestrian signals with countdown timers; and
• Installing new plantings.
The new Route 110-Northern Parkway Interchange complex complements two other Route 110 projects in Huntington: the adjacent Route 110 safety and mobility improvement project underway between the Long Island Expressway (LIE/I-495) and Arlington Road and between Fletcher Place and Amityville Road, and the Route 110-LIE Bridge reconstruction project that was completed in 2011. The Long Island branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers in May named the Route 110-NSP project "project of the year."
The construction contractor was Grace Industries, LLC of Plainview, Nassau County.
