NYSDOT Announces NY Works Paving For Mohawk Valley Roads

ALBANY, NY (08/10/2012)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that construction is under way on $19.8 million in work to resurface nearly 78 miles of state roads in Oneida, Oswego, Hamilton, Herkimer, Fulton and Montgomery counties through Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's NY Works program. It's expected that up to 280 jobs will be created.

"Governor Cuomo's NY Works program speeds up our bridge and highway reconstruction efforts and puts people back to work," Commissioner McDonald said. "The traveling public will see nearly twice as much highway work than just last year. We ask motorists to be patient and drive carefully through construction zones."

Today's announcement highlights continuing construction for NY Works transportation improvement projects only four months after Governor Cuomo signed the 2012-2013 Budget allowing funding for these projects to move forward.

NY Works focuses on improving pavement that is in fair condition and bringing it to good condition. This preventive maintenance work will better preserve the state's infrastructure and guard against the need for more costly, in-depth construction. Bundling project sites within close geographic locations into a single contract enables DOT to lower expenses and obtain lower bids.

The paving work is split up into the following three resurfacing contracts.

A $6.1 million contract to resurface 21.3 miles of pavement, improve drainage and restore pavement markings in Hamilton and Herkimer counties. Construction contractor Midland Asphalt Materials, Inc.of Tonawanda, Niagara County, will address:

• Six miles of Route 8 in the Town of Wells, from the Sacandaga River to the Warren County line. Work has begun and is expected to be completed early this month.

• Nearly six miles of Route 30 from Jessup River to Lewey Lake in Hamilton County. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-September and is expected to be completed early October.

• Route 8, for a distance of three miles east from the intersection of Route 365 in Herkimer County. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by mid-September.

• Seven miles of Route 365, from the Oneida County line to Route 8 in the Town of Ohio. Work is scheduled to begin in late September and be completed in October.

A $6.2 million contract to resurface 26.7 miles of pavement and restore pavement markings in Fulton, Montgomery and Herkimer counties. Construction contractor Rifenburg Construction, Inc., of Troy, Rensselaer County, will address:

• Two miles of Route 5 in the Town of Little Falls, from the west town line to Wind Bridge. Paving has been completed, with final pavement markings to be installed soon.

• Two miles of Route 5 in the City of Little Falls, from the west city line to the east city line. Paving has been completed, with final pavement markings to be installed soon.

• Two miles of Route 5S in the Village of Fort Plain. Paving has been completed, with final pavement markings to be installed soon.

• Eight miles of Route 30A, from the City of Fonda to the City of Johnstown. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by late August.

• Thirteen miles of Route 5 from the East Herkimer County line to the Village of Palantine Bridge. Work is scheduled to begin at the end of August and be completed by the end of September.

• Two miles of Route 30 from Route 5 to Miami Avenue in the City of Amsterdam. Work is scheduled to begin in mid-August and be completed by mid-September.

A $7.5 million contract to resurface 30 miles of pavement and restore pavement markings in Oswego, Oneida and Herkimer counties. Construction contractor Hanson Aggregates of Jamesville, Onondaga County, will address:

• Two miles of Route 922A (Mohawk Street) between Route 69 and Route 49 in Oneida County. Paving has been completed, with final pavement markings to be installed soon.

• Two miles of Route 922E (River Street) between Route 69 and the Erie Canal in Oneida County. Work has been completed at this location.

• One mile of Route 921W (French Road) from Burrstone Road to Chenango Road in Oneida County. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by mid-August.

• Two miles of Route 12B in Clinton from the north village line to New Hartford. Work begun and is expected to be completed by mid-August.

• Eight miles of Route 5 from Schuyler to Herkimer. Work is scheduled to begin in September and is expected to be completed by late October.

• Two miles of Interstate 790 from Leland Avenue to Edic Road in Oneida County. Work is scheduled to begin late September and is expected to be completed by late October.

• One and a half miles of Route 31 from Youngs Road to Route 26 in Oneida County. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by late August.

• Seven miles of Route 69 from Wolcott Road to the Taberg line. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by early September.

• Nearly seven miles of Route 49 between County Road 37 and Hatchery Road, in the towns of Constantia and West Monroe, Oswego County. Work has begun and is expected to be completed by late August.

Motorists may encounter flaggers directing traffic. It is imperative that the traveling public remember this season to drive carefully through the many highway and bridge construction zones they will encounter.
