ALBANY, NY (01/24/2014)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced the installation of flashing beacons in the northbound and southbound directions on State Route 8 between South New Berlin and South Edmeston in the towns of Norwich, New Berlin and Columbus, Chenango County.
"In response to community concerns, we undertook a traffic study to review the history on Route 8 and found that installing new devices would help alert motorists, especially those not familiar with the area, about the roadway geometry," Commissioner McDonald said. "These simple enhancements should greatly improve safety along this curvy stretch of Route 8 through Chenango County."
The flashing beacons will remind motorists of the need to slow down and proceed with caution as they enter the curves. The beacons became operational today.
Installation follows a traffic study undertaken by NYSDOT, which determined that the safety devices would help increase motorist safety on this stretch of highway. NYSDOT will also update signing with high intensity sign sheeting and add sign delineators to complement the flashing beacons.
