NYSDOT To Install Four-Way Stop This Week At Wheatland Intersection

ALBANY, NY (08/06/2013)(readMedia)-- New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joan McDonald today announced that a four-way stop will be installed this week at the intersection of State Route 36 and North Road in Wheatland, Monroe County. Tree removal and other sight distance improvements will also take place as part of this project.

The change from a two-way stop is expected to improve safety at this intersection by making all motorists stop and look for other vehicles before traveling through the intersection.

"Safety is our top priority," Commissioner McDonald said. "After a thorough engineering analysis, the New York State Department of Transportation has decided to install a four-way stop at Route 36 and North Road to make the intersection even safer, ensuring that each vehicle stops before proceeding."

State Senator Patrick Gallivan said, "I thank the State Department of Transportation for re-evaluating the intersection and taking additional safety measures to protect the traveling public. With community support and new information from law enforcement officials and others, NYSDOT was able to devise additional improvements that will make this location safer."

The work involves clearing trees and brush and removing an approximately five-foot-high dirt berm along the west side of Route 36, just north of the intersection with North Road. This clearing is outside of NYSDOT right of way and is being done in cooperation with the property owners. Flattening and clearing this location will extend sight distance for motorists looking north from the intersection, and for motorists traveling south along Route 36.

NYSDOT will install double stop signs – a stop sign on each side of the road – at all legs of the intersection for added visibility. New pavement striping and Stop Ahead signs will be added to provide advance warning. A temporary variable message sign will be located along Route 36 to alert motorists about the new traffic condition.

Work will begin on Wednesday morning and is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
