ALBANY, NY (02/28/2012)(readMedia)-- With one of this season's first significant snowstorms on the way, New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald today urged motorists to recognize the benefits of slow and cautious driving during winter weather.
"Because it has been an unusually mild winter, we're being cautious in reminding motorists to drive carefully and allow extra travel time during the storm," Commissioner McDonald said. "DOT's snowplow drivers across New York State are preparing equipment and getting ready to maintain safety on our roads and bridges throughout this storm."
Motorists may encounter greater than expected snowfall intensities and in some areas snow may mix with sleet and freezing rain at times. Although NYSDOT plows will be out in full force, snow may accumulate quickly on roadways, creating dangerous travel conditions. Avoid unnecessary travel and call 511 or visit www.511ny.org for the latest road condition reports.
Motorists should also remember these traffic safety tips:
• Never assume a snowplow driver can see you. Snowplows offer limited visibility and are difficult to maneuver or stop quickly. Drive a safe distance behind plows;
• Bridges freeze more quickly than road surfaces and may be slippery during or following a storm;
• If a traffic signal loses power, the intersection should be treated as a four-way stop; and
• Obey all traffic signs and never drive around a traffic barrier. Barriers are put up to protect motorists from unsafe conditions that may lie ahead.
NYSDOT also recommends having a cell phone handy, if possible, but do not call or text while driving. Never venture from your vehicle if snowbound, and equip your car with emergency supplies, including sand, shovel, flares, booster cables, rope, ice scraper, portable radio, flashlight, food, whistle, blankets and extra warm clothes. It is also recommended that motorists inform people of their destinations, intended routes and estimated times of arrival.
New York is participating in the "Ice and Snow – Take it Slow" publicity campaign with 23 other Snowbelt states to enhance public awareness about the benefits of cautious driving during winter storms.
