Warrant Officer Candidate Carl Chapman

LATHAM, NY (08/13/2015)(readMedia)-- Nassau resident Carl Chapman, a member of the New York Army National Guard, has been accepted in the Army's Warrant Officer program.

Prior to becoming a Warrant Officer Candidate Chapman was a Master Sergeant serving as the full-time detachment sergeant for the Headquarters Detachment of the New York National Guard's Joint Force Headquarters in Latham.

Warrant Officers are specialists in technical, intelligence, and personnel fields who are issued "warrants" for their ranks instead of the "commissions" presented to officers in the rank of lieutenant on up.

Chapman has served in the Army and the Army National Guard for 16 years. He enlisted in the Army in 1999 and was trained as a cryptologic linguist. He deployed to Iraq in April 2003 with the 502nd Military Intelligence Company and served as a section sergeant.

He joined the New York Army National Guard in 2004 and served as a traditional part-time National Guard Soldier from 2004 to 2008. In 2008 he was accepted in to the Active Guard and Reserve program, working full time as a unit administrator and in the New York Army National Guard personnel office.

Once he completes Warrant Officer Candidate School in the fall, Chapman will become a Warrant Officer 1 and will be assigned to the headquarters of the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy.

His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
