National Organization for Women-NYS Stand Up for the Poor
Urging Governor Spitzer & Legislature to Help New Yorks Most Needy
ALBANY, NY (01/08/2008)(readMedia)-- Press Statement by Marcia Pappas, President of NOW NYS
“On behalf of over 40,000 contributing members, NOW New York State is proud to stand with anti-poverty groups, urging Governor Spitzer and the NYS Legislature to take the bold steps needed for our poorest citizens in New York. Raising the welfare grant, enacting single-payer health care programs, and making the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes are essential elements to bringing all New Yorkers up and out of poverty.
Lawmakers have not raised the state welfare grant for 18 years and its value has declined to less than half of the poverty level. A family of three is currently forced to live on a mere $291.
Women and children make up 80% of all people who are living in poverty. With Governor Spitzer at the helm New York State can lead the charge in bringing every one of its citizens up and out of poverty. Equality can only be achieved when all citizens are offered the opportunity to make changes in their lives. Without good health care and financial assistance, people who live in poverty are unable to make decisions that will increase their ability to lead productive and fruitful lives. Today, we call upon our Governor and all Legislators to help our most vulnerable New Yorkers.
Further, although we support Governor Spitzer’s efforts to expand access to programs like Medicaid and Child Health Plus, we urge Governor to make proposals this year to increase state control over rate hikes by insurance companies; expand the bulk purchasing of prescription drugs; extend mental health parity rules to the state’s own programs; ensure adequate staffing of nurses; and, take steps to increase utilization of primary care physicians.
It is a crime that many people are forced to cancel their insurance policies for lack of funds to pay out of pocket. When individuals are forced to choose between feeding their children and medical treatment, everyone suffers. It is time to level the playing field and allow all New Yorkers to enjoy the benefits a decent income and health care. It is time for the wealthiest New Yorkers to pay their fair share.”
