National Organization for Women-New York State Celebrates
NYS Assembly's YES VOTE on Equal Marriage Bill A.8590
ALBANY, NY (06/20/2007)(readMedia)-- Today NOW-NYS applauds the NY State Assembly legislators who voted to end marriage discrimination for same sex couples in New York. Sponsored by Daniel O’Donnell (D) in the Assembly, Governor Spitzer's Bill (A.8590) was eloquently debated as activists watched and awaited the final vote.
“This is a giant step towards equality for all women. Momentum for the bill has been building since last year; and the last night's vote demonstrates to all New Yorkers that we continue to enjoy the support of Governor Eliot Spitzer and a great many legislators,” said NOW-NYS President Marcia A. Pappas.
Pappas continued: "Same-sex couples and their families must be free to choose to secure all the rights and responsibilities that come with marriage in New York State.
As we celebrate our victory in the New York State Assembly, NOW-NYS will continue to mobilize its many members and supporters to win the vote for NYS Senate Bill # S.5884.
And NOW salutes Senator Tom Duane (D), who has been the lead advocate for marriage equality in the Senate. Marriage equality will not be achieved until this bill becomes law.
Our NYS Assembly legislators have heard the demands of their constituents. And NOW-NYS will continue to urge the same support from our New York State Senators. From unions to religious leaders, from families and friends, the voices of the people of New York State will loudly proclaim: 'It's time for true marriage equality in New York State.'”
