New Morris Road Bridge over Turnpike Reopens to Traffic in Montgomery County

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA (04/29/2011)(readMedia)-- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission advises motorists that the new bridge carrying Morris Road over the Northeastern Extension (I-476) in Upper Gwynedd and Worcester townships, Montgomery County will reopen by 4 p.m. on May 2.

Prior to lifting the detour, the contractor has some final roadwork to complete early Monday morning. The scheduled work is weather dependent and could delay the opening.

The $7.8 million bridge, built by J. F. Shea Construction Inc., Mt. Pleasant, Pa., features a stone architectural treatment and anti-graffiti coatings with a wider roadway that includes two 11-foot lanes, wider shoulders and guiderail.

The Morris Road Bridge is the second bridge to be replaced in the northern section of the Turnpike's total reconstruction and widening project between Berks Road (milepost A26) and the Lansdale Interchange. Also scheduled for replacement in the northern section are bridges carrying Sumneytown Pike and Bustard Road over I-476.

Construction of the southern section of the total reconstruction and widening project between Mid-County and Berks Road (milepost A20-A26) began in March. Final design on the adjacent section to the north (milepost A26 to the Lansdale Interchange) is progressing, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in 2014.
