New York City Students Participate in 3rd Annual Student Research & Service Symposium

RIVERDALE, NY (05/14/2013)(readMedia)--  The College of Mount Saint Vincent will host its 3rd Annual Student Research & Service Symposium on Tuesday, May 14th. This event showcases the outstanding original research and service learning projects that Mount students complete every year.

"Our students are one of the truest measures of excellence we have as a college" says Dr. Omar Nagi, Director of Center for Undergraduate Research. "This is just one event where we annually celebrate our confidence in that measure."

Under the direction and mentorship of dedicated faculty members, students undertake original research projects in the sciences and the humanities. Much of the work is then presented at regional and national undergraduate research and graduate professional conferences.

This year's symposium will feature the following research projects:

• Angelica Tejada '13 (New York, NY) Desiree Alvarado '13 (Yonkers, NY ), and Jenny Maria '13 (Bronx, NY) will present their research poster titled "Recall accuracy of autobiographical memory relates to current goal strength. This study assessed accuracy of autobiographical memory as a function of a current personal goal. The students' research poster was presented at the Eastern Psychological Association conference in March, 2013.

• Yolisept Bencosme '13 (New York, NY) and Ashley Rivera '13 (Yonkers, NY) will present their research poster titled "The identity of an unknown gene required for sperm development in the fruit fly Drosophila".

• Alexmi Polanco '13 (New York, NY) and Nicole Rodriguez '13 (Bronx, NY) will present their research poster titled "Internship experience: Interpreting at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and its impact on learning". This research has been presented at the Annual Eastern Psychological Association and numerous local undergraduate research conferences.

• Stephanie Tejada '13 (New York, NY) will present her research titled "Synthesis and Purification of Meso-substituted porphyrins." Her research has been showcased at the American Chemical Society's 61st Annual Undergraduate Research conference. Ms. Milord conducted her research with fellow students Vicky Milord '13 (Brooklyn, NY) and Paz Julienne Rivera '13 (Bronx, NY).

• Dakota Ziani'13 (New York, NY) will present her research poster titled "Novel mutations in the TBCE-like gene."

Pamela Publik '13 (New York, NY) will present her honors research thesis titled "An exploration of consciousness through lucid dreaming"
